The swim baldder is used to create neutral bouyancy via expansion and contraction, if a fish can no longer do this they lose buoyancy and can no longer reach the water surface or can often end up upside down. The two most common causes of swim bladder disorder are the filling of the swim bladder with water, often from gulping at the water surface due to poor water quality or even from floating food. The other is constipation, where the gut enlarges and the swim bladder is compressed preventing its expansion.
